The SPATA Awards 2005: Rio Sweeps the board |

Family Firm Celebrates Pool Industry Oscars
A top swimming pool building team from Gloucestershire is celebrating after scooping an unprecedented six awards, including Pool Contractor of the Year, at the British pool industry equivalent to Hollywood’s Oscars.
Rio Pool Construction, of Kingswood, Wotton Under Edge, was the top-performing team at this year’s Swimming Pool and Allied Trade Association awards, winning two golds and two certificates of merits. Former Pool Retailers Of The Year, the Rio team was also named 2005 Pool Contractor of the year and was presented with the top accolade, a Special Award For Excellence In Pool Design and Construction for a stunning, concrete swimming pool installed last spring in the Hambrook area of Bristol.
Part of the National Leisure consortium of pool companies, Rio Pool Construction was founded by Rob Bateman, in the early 70s and is run with his wife, Sue. The couple’s four children, Wayne, Shelley, Candie and Gemma are all involved in the business. But the company is much more than a family affair with a total of 14 on the payroll, working on three to four pool building sites at any one time and selling spas, saunas and a comprehensive range of accessories, from the company showrooms at the Sunday School Rooms in The Chipping.
“We are delighted to have won an astonishing six awards,“ said Rob at the memorable awards ceremony in Brighton recently.
“Credit goes to the whole team for outstanding customer service and the high standards we set ourselves from the moment an enquiry comes in to signing off a completed pool and all the attention to detail in between.”
The British pool design awards are made by SPATA (The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association) – the UK industry watchdog for pool building standards. They are based on design and technical excellence, and are open to pools of all sizes and in all price categories.
Those lucky enough to swim in the Rio Pool Construction’s top prize-winning pool, can enjoy a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside, as the pool is built on a terrace four metres above the neighbouring field. This made the building of the pool particularly difficult as all the materials and equipment had to be craned in. Great attention has been paid to all details, including a white marblite and dark blue ceramic mosaic tile band and an underground safety cover.
The pool’s proud owner, Mrs Baker, says: “I could not recommend Rio Pools more highly – they have done a wonderful job and we wouldn’t be without the pool. In the summer, our family spend most of their time in it! It has added a new dimension to our leisure time.”
The Rio Pool Construction team won:
- Gold and Special Award For Excellence In Pool Design and Construction
- Residential outdoor pool category for concrete pools valued up to £30,000.
- Gold – residential outdoor pool category for concrete pools valued over £30,000.
- Certificate of Merit – residential outdoor pool category for liner pools up to £25,000.
- Certificate of Merit – residential outdoor pool category for concrete pools over £30,000
- Pool Contractor Of The Year 2005
